Palm Wine Tapping

Unique to the region is an educational visit to one of the local communities to learn all about the tradition of wine tapping from the Ilala palm. Laced in Mahenye tradition, this traditional form of wine tapping involves digging into the bulb of the palm and collecting the dripping sap in a clay pot, where it is left to ferment and naturally develop into palm wine.

Our visit to Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge exceeded all our expectation. The hospitality was the very best, for the reception, to the restaurant and bar, and the guiding. We could not have wished for anything more. The trip into the park was guided with expertise and with great awareness of our interests. The park looked fabulous after the rains, and we saw over 130 species of birds and some special mammal sightings.

This place is spectacular and truly special for nourishing the adventurous spirit. We stayed with our extended family for a week and had all our desires exceeded. This included wonderful local foods, comfortable room arrangements, and amazing service. The game drives are led by very experienced and engaging guides who provided us with a rich repertoire of knowledge surrounding the local fauna and flora. Sundowners (the safari cocktail hour featuring Gin and tonics with Biltong) were the cherry on top.

I thought I knew Zimbabwe pretty well but I'd never been to Chilo Gorge Lodge or Gonarezhou Park. I have now! The park itself is astonishing: vast, brutal, wild, with huge gorges climbing above dense bush and languid rivers. There are dozens and dozens of magnificent baobab trees, hundreds of years old. The southern African bush should never be about list-ticking but how's this for a week's game drives: a leopard with its kill up a tree; hippos; giraffe; jackal; fish eagles; buffalo; zebra; kudu; nyala; hyena; warthogs; mongoose. Hundreds and hundreds of truly wild elephants, surly and magnificent. Lions calling to each other at night. Cheetah tracks in the dust next morning.
